In his role, Denhoff oversees facilities management at two main campuses, Petoskey and Cheboygan. His team is responsible for various buildings, including the 650,000-square-foot Petoskey campus and the 150,000-square-foot Cheboygan facility, which houses a freestanding outpatient facility, a behavioral health unit, and a surgery center. Denhoff’s team includes managers for facilities, security, EVS, and supervisors for the Cheboygan Campus, with approximately 80 full-time equivalents.

“Our goal is to ensure that every facility we manage not only meets but exceeds the highest standards of safety and efficiency so our patients and staff can focus on providing and receiving exceptional care,” Denhoff says.

Enhancing patient care

One of the key projects under Denhoff’s leadership was the expansion of the South Campus, valued at $153 million. This extensive project, initiated in 2017 and completed in phases, involved constructing a new tower with advanced facilities, including new operating rooms, ICU beds, and a cardiac floor. Despite the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Denhoff and his team completed the project, continuously addressing punch list items to ensure the highest quality and functionality standards. The expansion included building new utilities, a boiler plant, and various clinical spaces, ultimately transforming McLaren Northern Michigan into a state-of-the-art healthcare facility.

Denhoff’s team recently completed a significant renovation at the Cheboygan campus, converting old med-surge beds into a behavioral health unit. This complex project involved working with architects and engineers to create a facility that meets the unique needs of behavioral health patients, including anti-ligature designs and specialized room configurations. Additionally, Denhoff’s team oversaw clinical remodels and refreshes, such as the expansion of the orthopedic clinic, which involved converting suites into an orthopedic suite with new exam rooms and improved patient flow.

“Our team plays a crucial role in ensuring that every person who enters our facilities feels safe and supported, especially during challenging times. We’re committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and comfort so patients and their families can focus on what truly matters: receiving excellent care and support.” Denhoff says.

Leading with transparency

Denhoff is dedicated to professional development and continuous improvement, holding the Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) certification from the American Hospital Association. As President of the Michigan Society for Healthcare Engineering, he advocates for ongoing education and strong relationships with vendor partners, ensuring his team is well-equipped to handle the evolving demands of healthcare facilities management.

Recruiting and retaining skilled staff is a significant challenge for Denhoff, particularly as many experienced workers approach retirement. The healthcare industry competes with local mechanical trade companies for top talent, and the aging infrastructure further complicates the situation. Denhoff emphasizes transparency during the hiring process, thoroughly explaining job expectations and benefits to potential hires. He fosters a supportive and engaging work environment, promoting outside activities to build a strong, family-like team dynamic.

“Staying committed to professional growth and creating a supportive team environment is key to overcoming healthcare facility management challenges. It’s all about ensuring our team is prepared, and our facilities are efficient, even when resources are tight,” Denhoff says.

Budget constraints are another challenge Denhoff faces, as flashy new medical equipment often takes priority over essential facility maintenance. Despite these obstacles, he remains committed to maintaining high standards and ensuring operational efficiency. Denhoff’s leadership style focuses on adapting to change, effective communication, and fostering respect within his team, driving their success in providing top-quality care and support to McLaren Northern Michigan’s patients.

From plumber to healthcare facilities leader

Denhoff started his career as a plumber; he developed technical skills and a strong work ethic. His interest in facilities management began when he took a maintenance position at a local hospital, where his proactive approach led to his promotion to supervisor and later manager.

In 2012, Denhoff joined Scheurer Hospital as a plant engineer, eventually becoming the plant engineering technical leader. His exceptional leadership and technical expertise significantly contributed to the hospital’s operations.

In 2016, Denhoff became the manager of facilities at McLaren Northern Michigan. He ensures the hospital’s facilities meet the highest safety, efficiency, and patient care standards. His leadership drives initiatives to enhance the hospital’s infrastructure and operations.

Outside of work, Denhoff enjoys hunting, fishing, hiking, and kayaking with family and friends. Married for 32 years, he credits his wife for her unwavering support. Together, they have raised three successful sons. Denhoff takes pride in his legacy as a family man and leader, hoping to have instilled the right mentality for success in his children.

“My journey has been shaped by a commitment to excellence and a passion for improving healthcare environments. I’m proud to bring that same dedication to ensuring top-quality care and infrastructure at McLaren Northern Michigan, all while balancing a fulfilling family life and enjoying the great outdoors,” Denhoff says.
