As the executive director of capital projects and facilities at Alfred University, Jamie Babcock plays a crucial role in enhancing the student experience through his leadership in managing and developing the university’s infrastructure. Transforming infrastructure to support excellence

In his role, Babcock oversees significant projects that contribute to the university’s mission of offering the best student experience. One of the key projects under his direction is the ongoing residential hall renovations. With a budget of $4-6 million, these renovations began in 2020 and have continued annually. The aim is to update and improve all residential halls with new windows, flooring, roofs, heating systems, and common spaces. This project addresses deferred maintenance issues and significantly enhances the quality of student residential life, ensuring a comfortable and modern living environment.

Another major project is the construction of a new facilities building. This 11,000-square-foot, $4.2 million project will consolidate the maintenance staff, currently dispersed across the campus, into a single upgraded and safe facility. This move will bring continuity and consistency to the maintenance operations, fostering better staff teamwork, culture, and camaraderie. The building will house administrative offices, conference rooms, drawing rooms, and new shops for maintenance trades, creating a cohesive and efficient work environment.

The Saxson Hill project is another significant undertaking. This $30 million athletic complex will feature a new turf baseball stadium, a 400m NCAA track and field, a rugby field, and multi-purpose fields. The complex, located about two miles south of the main campus, will also include buildings and stadiums that support these athletic facilities. The Saxson Hill project aims to enhance the university’s athletic infrastructure and serve as a recruitment tool for prospective students.

Another notable project is the renovation of an old heating plant into a state-of-the-art foundry and metallurgy facility. Working with the State University Construction Fund, this $10 million renovation will create one of the premier facilities for metalworking in the Northeast.

This reorganization includes a new structure and organizational chart to improve operational and custodial maintenance services. With all the necessary approvals in place, Babcock is excited to implement these changes, strengthening the university’s facilities and supporting its unique dual statutory and non-statutory structure.

Climbing the ranks

Initially hired as an outside contractor, Babcock worked for a small local construction company specializing in various projects. His exceptional work caught the attention of Alfred University, and he was invited to apply for an open carpenter position. After several years of contributing to numerous small projects, Babcock accepted the job offer, marking the beginning of his long-term association with the university.

Babcock honed his skills and built a reputation for reliability and excellence. His talent and dedication did not go unnoticed. Starting as a head carpenter, Babcock’s leadership qualities soon saw him promoted to maintenance supervisor. His consistent performance and innovative approach had earned him the title of director of facilities.

In 2017, Babcock took on the role of executive director of capital projects and facilities operations. This position allowed him to oversee large-scale projects and manage the university’s facilities with a strategic vision. His extensive experience in construction and facilities management proved invaluable, ensuring that projects were completed efficiently and to the highest standards.

Babcock’s career trajectory has continued to ascend, with his latest promotion to associate vice president of facilities. This new role recognizes his significant contributions and positions him further to influence the university’s infrastructure and capital projects.

When Babcock is not immersed in his professional responsibilities, he enjoys a fulfilling personal life in New York. A big Buffalo Bills fan, Babcock’s passion for football and sports is evident. He cherishes spending time with his children and grandchildren and engaging in activities such as hunting and fishing. Babcock also loves cooking and hosting gatherings, where he shares his culinary creations with family and friends.
