For Vance Thornton, the blueprint to success was never handed to him—it was something he built, brick by brick, beam by beam. Growing up in a financially struggling household with a single mother, Thornton knew early on that he wanted something different for his future. He credits a junior high woodshop teacher, Mr. Anderson, for lighting that first spark of possibility.

“He took me under his wing at a very challenging time in my life,” Thornton says. “Working with him evenings and weekends kept me out of trouble, and I never forgot how much it helped me.”
That experience would prove life-changing. Thornton’s first job came simply by asking a roofer if he needed help. Showing up early the next day, he began work at Wilson Properties, where he spent seven years learning every aspect of residential remodeling. He quickly climbed the ladder, eventually managing the entire company. His nights were spent studying construction management at The Ohio State University, along with mechanical and electrical engineering. When it came time to move into commercial construction, Thornton was well-prepared and ready for more.
Pivoting with purpose
After a seven-year stint with a commercial construction firm where he rose from ironworker to senior project manager, Thornton launched Advance Construction, Inc. in 1995. From the outset, his vision was clear: to deliver exceptional work with unmatched attention to detail, while treating clients as partners.

That approach has paid off. Over the past three decades, Advance Construction, Inc. has evolved into a trusted name in medical office construction. Thornton’s nimbleness and foresight helped carve a niche during the 2008 economic downturn, when many general contractors shuttered.
“There weren’t many people focusing on medical,” he recalls. “I saw an opportunity to specialize and serve a growing need, and we’ve never looked back.”
Every Advance project begins with due diligence—location, budget, and timeline—but Thornton goes further. He offers free site evaluations, helps clients build teams of realtors, lenders, accountants, and medical equipment suppliers, and provides end-to-end support throughout the design and build process.
“We offer a turnkey solution,” he explains, “so our clients can focus on their practice, not the process.”
Signature progress & lasting impact
Now 62, Thornton is putting the final touches on what he considers one of his most exciting projects: the Springfield Gentle Dental medical office building. The facility spans 10,000 square feet, featuring 18 dental treatment rooms and upper-floor office space for staff and training. Its elegant finishes—Italian tiles, marble floors, and a chandelier-lit waiting room—match its forward-looking purpose. The project has generated buzz in Springfield, with community members excited about its potential to revitalize the area.

“It’s not the biggest job we’ve done, but it’s one of the most rewarding,” Thornton says. “It’s high-end, functional, and beautiful—and it’s going to have a real impact on the community.”
That same attention to detail can be seen in other standout projects, like Hines Little Smiles, a whimsical and kid-friendly fully accredited Pediatric oral surgery center and a 14-treatment room pediatric dental office designed with young patients in mind. From colorful interiors to engaging waiting areas, Thornton’s adaptability shines through.
“It’s about understanding what the client and their patients need,” he says. “No two medical projects are the same.”
Thornton’s insistence on excellence extends to every subcontractor and supplier.
“We use specialty subcontractors for all our work,” he says. “Each worker is evaluated independently on every project. If they do not meet our standards, they do not stay on the job.”
Subcontractors are paid on time, equipment is installed with precision, and deadlines are met—all part of the Advance promise.
Relationship, reputation & reflection
Thornton knows that in construction, quality alone isn’t enough. Relationships are everything.

“We don’t just build buildings—we build trust,” he says. “A lot of our clients come back to us because they know we’re going to treat them right.”
Part of that trust stems from Thornton’s commitment to transparency and service. Clients receive upfront cost estimates with incredible accuracy, eliminating the surprises that so often derail construction projects.
“The hardest part of my job is making sure that we prepare a very detailed and accurate construction estimate,” he says. “But what I love most is seeing our customers realize their dream of a new office, without the stress this industry is known for.”
Thornton’s success has never dulled his appreciation for where he came from.
“I never imagined the company being where it is today,” he reflects. “I told myself as a teenager I wasn’t going to live like that, and I’ve worked every day since to make it happen.”
When he’s not on a job site or coordinating a build, Thornton unwinds by restoring vintage cars, strumming his guitar, or spending time on the water aboard his boats.
“Boating helps me keep a calm mindset,” he says. “And that mindset carries over into work.”
Looking ahead, Thornton sees a bright future for Advance Construction, with more high-end projects and continued growth in the medical sector. But whatever lies ahead, his priorities remain the same: quality, integrity, and service.
“Our job is to make the process smooth and enjoyable for our clients,” he says. “We take the stress out of building so they can focus on the future.”
In an industry often marked by chaos and change, Vance Thornton has built something far more enduring: a legacy defined by craftsmanship, character, and care.
