Scott Fuller – Texas A&M Health Science Center

Driving advancements for Texas healthcare organization

Scott Fuller holds the important position of associate vice president for clinical initiatives and real estate at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center (Texas A&M Health), a distinguished Tier 1 research institution dedicated to enhancing the overall health of Texans. Operating as a government agency closely linked with both the university and the state, Texas A&M Health focuses on training highly skilled healthcare practitioners who hopefully will go on to serve the Texas populace.

Fuller provides guidance for the strategic direction and clinical operations of Texas A&M Health’s five schools, and he’s pivotal in developing, implementing and supporting strategic clinical initiatives. He also manages the health science center’s extensive real estate portfolio, valued at approximately $750 million. This multifaceted responsibility encompasses various projects to advance healthcare infrastructure and services across the state.

“I am honored to play an important role in shaping the future of healthcare delivery in Texas. With a focus on strategic clinical initiatives and real estate management, we aim to enhance the overall health of Texans by training highly skilled healthcare practitioners and advancing healthcare infrastructure across the state,” Fuller tells Vanguard during an interview in March.

Shaping future healthcare initiatives

One of Fuller’s most ambitious projects is the construction program to build out a cutting-edge facility for EnMed, a collaborative medical school program between Texas A&M’’s schools of Medicine and Engineering and Houston Methodist Hospital. With an initial acquisition investment of $145M, this project is poised to redefine the region’s healthcare landscape by providing state-of-the-art facilities for medical education, research, clinical practice, and industry partnerships.

“By integrating engineering and medical degrees, EnMed aims to pioneer groundbreaking technologies, attracting the attention of medical tech companies eager to collaborate and innovate,” Fuller explains.

In navigating the complex terrain of engineering medicine, Fuller demonstrates astute decision-making by strategically aligning with individuals with a common vision of workforce development and innovation. EnMed garners widespread interest despite its niche appeal, resulting in a continuous influx of applicants eager to enroll in its pioneering programs, he says.

In addition to being one of the leaders on the EnMed project, Fuller has successfully championed the establishment of a revolutionary telehealth institute in College Station. Spanning an impressive 13,000 square feet, this state-of-the-art facility is poised to revolutionize remote healthcare delivery by offering secure, high-speed internet connectivity and private videoconferencing booths for consultations.

Leveraging his expertise in healthcare infrastructure and collaborative approach, and with vital assistance from John Childers, managing director with JLL, Fuller played a crucial role in identifying the optimal location and ensuring the institute’s alignment with its mission to advance telehealth services and research.

Challenges and opportunities

Fuller’s leadership has been marked by a steadfast dedication to nurturing employees and students. Recognizing the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, Fuller has prioritized initiatives to expand enrollment, enhance academic offerings and elevate the research stature of the institution’s schools.

Under the visionary guidance of Chancellor John Sharp, Fuller has spearheaded efforts to position Texas A&M Health as a beacon of excellence in medical education, research, and healthcare innovation. By fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, Fuller has empowered employees and students alike to contribute to the institution’s mission of advancing healthcare delivery and access across Texas.

Despite the challenges posed by the absence of a teaching hospital, Fuller has demonstrated remarkable leadership in cultivating vital partnerships with healthcare systems throughout the state. These strategic alliances provide diverse clinical experiences to medical students and residents, ensuring they receive comprehensive training and exposure to various medical specialties.

Fuller’s commitment to mentorship underscores his dedication to nurturing the next generation of healthcare administrators. Drawing upon his experiences and relationships with mentors, Fuller provides invaluable guidance and support to aspiring professionals, equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in the field. By fostering a culture of mentorship and continuous learning, Fuller is shaping a legacy of excellence that will endure for years to come.

“We need to train the next generation of healthcare leaders, and our efforts here are a big part of that,” Fuller says.

Charting success in healthcare

Fuller’s journey into healthcare administration and real estate is deeply personal, driven by his upbringing and experiences. Witnessing his younger sister’s significant healthcare challenges firsthand ignited a passion for improving the efficiency and accessibility of the healthcare system.

With a degree from Brigham Young University and a master’s in health services administration from Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business, Fuller embarked on his professional path with a strong foundation in healthcare management.

With thirty years of healthcare administration experience, Fuller honed his skills through diverse roles at prestigious institutions. From his early years at Phoenix Children’s Hospital to his extensive tenure with the Seton Healthcare Family and Ascension Health, Fuller demonstrated leadership and commitment to excellence.

In July 2020, Fuller joined Texas A&M Health as the associate vice president of clinical initiatives and real estate. Here, he leverages his experience and visionary leadership to drive forward initiatives that develop medical services and partnerships through innovative real estate strategies.

“I consider it a real privilege to be a part of the Texas A&M family. There is a deep culture of selfless service that goes back to when the school was founded in 1876. Aggies truly live their values, which I am grateful to be part of,” he says.
