A career that spans engineering, global project delivery, and executive leadership has positioned Saquib Butt to see the life sciences construction sector from a uniquely comprehensive vantage point, and now, in his role as vice president of sector solutions for life sciences at Suffolk Construction, a national leader in the construction industry, he is applying that perspective to help shape the company’s next phase of growth.

Saquib Butt | Suffolk Construction | Vice President of Sector Solutions, Life Sciences
Suffolk is a national enterprise that builds, innovates and invests, delivering value across the entire project lifecycle through construction management, design, self-perform services and technology investment, while advancing AI-driven and data-focused solutions to redefine how projects are delivered.
Butt plays a pivotal role in expanding the company’s footprint in the life sciences sector, particularly in biomanufacturing, an area experiencing significant momentum across the United States. His focus centers on operational excellence, technology integration, and sustainability, all while positioning Suffolk as an innovative, trusted partner for some of the most complex and capital-intensive projects in the industry.
“I think I am a people and project manager first,” Butt says.
That mindset reflects a shift from his early years as an engineer, where his work was rooted in calculations, design validation, and technical execution. Over time, his responsibilities evolved into leadership roles that required a broader understanding of business development, team building, and client engagement. Today, his work is less about individual design decisions and more about orchestrating the right people, processes, and partnerships to deliver successful outcomes.
Butt’s transition to Suffolk also marked a shift from the owner’s side of the industry to the service provider side, a move that has proven to be a defining advantage. With more than two decades of experience working directly for life sciences organizations, he brings a deep understanding of how owners define success, not just in terms of cost and schedule, but in terms of long-term operational performance and strategic alignment.
“That owner’s perspective helps define success beyond just delivering a project,” Butt says.
It is a perspective that influences how he approaches everything, from early-stage conversations to project execution, emphasizing collaboration, transparency, and relationship building throughout a project’s lifecycle.
Building relationships that drive projects
A significant portion of Butt’s role revolves around business development, where he is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with clients, consultants, and supply chain partners. In a sector where projects can take years to materialize and require extensive coordination, those relationships are often the difference between opportunity and execution.

“Winning a job is not easy; it takes years of groundwork and relationship building,” Butt says.
That groundwork includes engaging with stakeholders early, understanding their goals, and aligning Suffolk’s capabilities with their expectations. Butt places particular emphasis on meeting decision-makers face to face, whether they are clients, vendors, or utility providers, believing that those connections create a level of trust that cannot be replicated remotely.
His global experience, spanning Asia, Europe, and the United States, has reinforced that belief. Having grown up outside the United States, Butt developed an early appreciation for cultural nuance and communication, skills that continue to inform his approach to team building and client engagement.
“Everything is about the people,” Butt says.
That philosophy extends to how he evaluates talent and assembles project teams. Butt recognizes that successful projects require a mix of skill sets, from individuals who excel in focused execution to those who can lead, communicate, and elevate the performance of an entire team. His ability to identify and balance those dynamics has become a key part of his leadership approach.
Technology & innovation as differentiators
Beyond relationships, Butt is also deeply involved in advancing Suffolk’s use of technology, which has become a cornerstone of the company’s value proposition. Through dedicated investments in innovation, Suffolk continually integrates emerging tools that improve efficiency, safety, and transparency across projects.
One example is the company’s AI-powered owner dashboard, which aggregates real-time data from multiple systems to provide a comprehensive view of project performance. Metrics such as cost, schedule, safety, and supply chain status are presented in a visual, easily digestible format, allowing stakeholders to stay informed and aligned.
This level of visibility is particularly valuable in life sciences projects, where complexity and regulatory requirements demand high precision and coordination. By leveraging technology, Suffolk can streamline processes, reduce risk, and enhance decision-making for both its teams and clients.

Suffolk is applying this approach to Brown University’s new Integrated Life Sciences Building, a 300,000-square-foot facility designed to bring together the full spectrum of scientific inquiry under one roof. The building will house wet and dry laboratories alongside offices, collaboration spaces, lab support areas, and ground-floor retail — a mix intended to foster the kind of cross-disciplinary exchange that defines modern research environments.
The company’s investment strategy also includes partnerships with technology startups, enabling it to pilot innovations such as robotics and AI-based project management tools. These efforts are designed to address industry challenges, including labor shortages and increasing project complexity. Butt sees these advancements as essential to the industry’s future, particularly as artificial intelligence continues to reshape how work is performed.
“The world is changing drastically, and AI is coming on the horizon,” Butt says.
Sustainability & operational excellence
Sustainability has also become a central focus of Butt’s work, especially within the life sciences sector, where clients are increasingly prioritizing environmental performance alongside operational efficiency. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies are investing heavily in sustainable infrastructure, often incorporating renewable energy systems, carbon reduction strategies, and advanced building technologies into their facilities.

Suffolk’s approach involves working closely with clients to understand their sustainability goals and developing tailored strategies to achieve them. This partnership includes collaboration with design teams, construction managers, and specialized consultants to ensure that sustainability is integrated into every phase of a project.
At the same time, Butt is focused on operational excellence, ensuring that projects are delivered not only to specification but also in a way that supports long-term performance. This includes addressing challenges such as supply chain disruptions, which became particularly pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In response, Suffolk developed Freedom Source, a dedicated supply chain division that leverages the company’s scale to secure materials and equipment more effectively. By consolidating purchasing across projects and building strong relationships with suppliers, the company can mitigate risk and maintain project schedules, even in a volatile market.
Another critical area is commissioning, qualification, and validation (CQV). In life sciences projects, this process ensures that facilities meet stringent regulatory and operational requirements before they can begin production. While traditionally considered the owner’s responsibility, Suffolk has developed capabilities to support clients through this phase, helping to bridge a gap that often presents significant challenges.
Positioning for a growing market
Butt’s efforts are taking place against the backdrop of a broader industry trend, as life sciences companies continue to invest heavily in U.S.-based manufacturing and research facilities. Driven by factors such as supply chain resilience, government incentives, and evolving regulatory landscapes, this shift toward domestic production is creating significant opportunities for construction firms with the right expertise.

Suffolk has already demonstrated its capabilities in the sector, completing approximately 15 million square feet of life sciences space and working with leading companies on projects ranging from research and development to gene therapy programs. Butt’s role is to build on that foundation, strengthen relationships with key clients, and position the company for future growth, particularly in biomanufacturing.
This includes engaging with organizations early in their planning processes, ensuring that Suffolk is part of the conversation as projects move from concept to execution. By leveraging his experience on the owner’s side, Butt can anticipate client needs and align the company’s approach accordingly.
He is also focused on enhancing Suffolk’s brand within the life sciences community, highlighting differentiators such as technology integration, operational expertise, and a collaborative approach to project delivery.
A personal perspective
Butt’s journey to this role reflects a combination of technical expertise and leadership development. He earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering before building a career that included more than 16 years at Genzyme, nearly a decade at Boston Scientific, and leadership roles at SmartLabs, where he served as senior vice president of infrastructure and assets.

Throughout those experiences, he developed a deep understanding of life sciences infrastructure, from early-stage design to large-scale capital projects. His transition to Suffolk represents a continuation of that work, but with a broader scope and the opportunity to influence projects across the industry.
Outside of work, Butt emphasizes family and balance. He enjoys spending time with his children, particularly playing golf with his son, and values the opportunity to stay connected with his parents. Those priorities provide a counterbalance to the demands of his professional role and reinforce his belief in the importance of relationships, both in and out of the workplace.
As he continues to build Suffolk’s presence in the life sciences sector, Butt remains focused on the same principles that have guided his career: understanding people, fostering collaboration, and delivering results that extend beyond project completion.
