Compton Unified School District, located in the south-central region of Los Angeles County, serves nearly 26,000 students across 36 campuses in the city of Compton and parts of Carson and Los Angeles. Under the leadership of Superintendent Dr. Darin Brawley, the district has undergone a dramatic turnaround marked by rising student achievement, a graduation rate nearing 90 percent, major facilities improvements, and a district-wide focus on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. “All projects are equally important at the time they’re happening,” he said. “We focus on completing each one before moving on to the next opportunity.”

Holt began his facilities journey at Santa Monica College and went on to serve in several school districts before joining Compton Unified. His deep understanding of contracts, construction processes, and operational logistics helped him rise through the ranks to his current position overseeing 32 school sites, auxiliary buildings, and charter school facilities. He now leads a small but effective team that includes a secretary and several dedicated staff members who share his focus on accountability and continuous improvement.

He also views new construction as just one part of a larger responsibility. For Holt, the work doesn’t end when the ribbon is cut. “A building is only as good as the way it’s maintained,” he said. “We make sure it stays clean, operable, and inviting for everyone who walks through its doors.”

The ongoing work of maintenance

While large-scale construction projects often draw headlines, Holt knows that the heart of facilities management lies in the daily work that keeps systems running and schools safe. His team tackles everything from life safety and fire alarm systems to public address systems and routine repairs, ensuring that each campus remains in top condition.

Maintenance, he said, is a never-ending effort. “There’s always something to fix or improve,” Holt explained. “It’s a continuous process, but that’s what keeps our schools operating smoothly and our students learning without disruption.”

That attention to detail also extends to the appearance of the district’s buildings. Holt believes that maintaining a school’s exterior is just as important as what happens inside. Clean, well-maintained campuses, he said, make a powerful first impression on families. “When parents drive by or walk up to a school, they should feel a sense of pride,” he said. “We want them to see a place that’s cared for, because that reflects how we value their children’s education.”

It’s a philosophy that connects directly to Compton Unified’s vision of empowering leaders, teachers, and students. Facilities are more than physical structures—they’re the foundation for educational excellence and community trust. Away from the office, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf, and traveling to San Diego and Mexico. He also admits to a fondness for shopping at Under Armour and people-watching—a pastime that reflects his genuine interest in people and community life.

Those human connections, both inside and outside of work, are what keep him motivated. He’s proud of Compton’s history and the many notable figures who once walked its halls, including music legends Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre. Their success stories serve as reminders of what can happen when students are given the right environment to grow.

Every improvement his team makes, he said, is a small investment in that future. “Our goal is to make sure students have everything they need to focus on learning,” Holt said. “When facilities are well maintained, students and teachers can do their best work.”

His leadership style blends practicality with deep empathy. He sees the facilities department not as a support function but as a partner in education, one that directly impacts student outcomes. “We don’t just build or repair buildings,” he said. “We create spaces where learning happens and where futures begin.”
