St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton is one of Ontario’s leading academic and research hospitals, known for its integrated care model and its mission to serve the community with compassion and dignity. Spanning multiple campuses across the city, the organization delivers acute care, mental health services, research, and education while placing people at the center of every decision. For Lisa Debenham, director of redevelopment and planning, joining St. Joe’s felt like more than a career transition. It became an alignment of values, purpose, and the kind of meaningful work she had spent her entire professional life preparing for.

Long before she stepped into hospital corridors or led redevelopment initiatives, Debenham found herself drawn to the power of design. As a child, she spent hours sketching floor plans, experimenting with layouts, and imagining how spaces could function more easily and with greater warmth. That curiosity became the foundation for an architectural career shaped by both creativity and precision.
Her early experience in construction became just as influential. Working on job sites gave her an understanding of the collaborative, hands-on nature of building in real time. She learned how plans evolved once shovels hit the ground and how essential adaptability and problem-solving were when working within the constraints of active, complex environments.
Those lessons remain central to the way she approaches healthcare redevelopment today.
“Early experience in construction not only taught me the importance of collaboration, adaptability, and practical problem solving but also gave me invaluable insight into how design translates into the built environment,” Debenham says.
At St. Joe’s, where every square foot is tied to patient care, operational flow, and clinical safety, she draws heavily on this blended foundation. Her work requires a balance of aesthetic vision, functional planning, and a deep respect for how spaces shape healing. She strives to ensure that every project upholds both regulatory standards and the emotional experience of patients, families, and staff.
Finding meaning in healthcare
Although her construction career included work across various sectors, healthcare projects quickly became the ones that resonated most deeply. She found herself compelled by the idea that a room, a hallway, or a thoughtfully planned renovation could offer comfort or hope to someone in crisis.

As she became more involved in hospital construction and design, that sense of purpose grew stronger. Eventually, it inspired her move to The Hospital for Sick Children, a place that forever shaped her understanding of impact. Walking the halls, seeing families find rest in newly created spaces, and witnessing how even small improvements changed the patient experience cemented her commitment to healthcare redevelopment.
“Knowing that every detail mattered and that my efforts contributed to spaces that supported healing was not only professionally fulfilling, but also personally meaningful,” she says.
SickKids also became a pivotal chapter in her leadership journey. Surrounded by compassionate, visionary colleagues, she learned to lead with empathy and to value listening just as much as directing. She discovered that the best project outcomes came from supporting her teams, empowering partners, and fostering collaboration across departments. Those principles remain the backbone of her leadership philosophy today.
Leadership rooted in compassion
At St. Joe’s, Debenham leads with an approach that prioritizes kindness and authentic connection. Whether overseeing complex redevelopments or supporting day-to-day improvements, she strives to create spaces where people feel valued, safe, and engaged. Her teams know her door is always open.

“My goal is for everyone to truly love the spaces where they work,” she says. “By fostering a team culture built on compassion and kindness, I create an environment where people feel comfortable expressing their needs and concerns.”
She believes that design excellence and operational effectiveness are inseparable from emotional well-being. A wellness room, a staff lounge, or the renovation of a high-traffic corridor can provide relief in demanding clinical settings. These small changes often carry the same weight as major capital projects. In a hospital environment, anything that supports the people who care for the community becomes essential infrastructure.
Her emphasis on compassion also extends to the way she mentors others. Having benefited from extraordinary mentors throughout her own career, she now prioritizes supporting young professionals, especially women, as they navigate construction and healthcare leadership. She continues to work with an executive coach, strengthening her commitment to authenticity, humility, and self-awareness.
“I don’t know everything, and I am comfortable with that,” she says. “Embracing what I don’t know allows me to remain open, curious, and humble.”
The impact of her leadership is evident not only within St. Joe’s but also among colleagues from previous workplaces who still reach out to share how her support influenced their paths. These lasting connections reflect her belief that leadership is not about titles or hierarchy. It is about showing people that they matter.
Balancing purpose, family & personal values
Debenham’s move to St. Joe’s was as personal as it was professional. After years of demanding commutes and intense project schedules, she longed for greater balance for herself and her family. Her husband, who works in a similar industry, understands the pressures of capital development. Together, they had navigated the challenges of raising three children during the pandemic while juggling careers that rarely slowed. Remote work became a turning point, giving her precious moments that had once seemed impossible in the rush of pre-pandemic routine.

The decision to leave SickKids was difficult but ultimately guided by values and family encouragement. Her daughter reminded her that she could build new relationships in a place closer to home and still make a meaningful contribution to healthcare. Their confidence gave her the assurance she needed to take a leap toward a more balanced life.
“St. Joe’s mission, vision, and values truly resonated with me on a profound level,” she says. “The core values of dignity, respect, service, responsibility, justice, and discovery reflect the way I aim to conduct myself every day.”
As a Catholic healthcare organization, St. Joe’s offered a spiritual connection that felt grounding and aligned with how she wanted to lead. It allowed her to merge her personal beliefs with her professional aspirations in a way that felt both intentional and purposeful.
In her role, Debenham oversees a vast portfolio of redevelopment and planning initiatives across St. Joe’s campuses. These range from facilitating moves, improving wayfinding and signage, completing both minor and major renovations, enhancing security, addressing floods, and small but meaningful enhancements for staff and patients.
She is reluctant to highlight one particular initiative as an example of the organization’s commitment to unstoppable compassion because she sees that spirit reflected in every project and interaction.
“Unstoppable compassion isn’t limited to any one project at St. Joe’s,” she explains. “It is the driving force behind every single initiative we undertake.”
Her team may be renovating patient care areas one moment and helping a family find their way to an appointment the next. They may be coordinating a strategic redevelopment plan or finding office space for new staff. No matter the task, the priority remains the same: to support the well-being of patients, families, and staff through spaces that feel safe, functional, and grounded in care.
Opening doors for women in construction & healthcare
Throughout her career, Debenham has faced and witnessed barriers that women often encounter in male-dominated industries. She recalls moments where comments about her appearance or expectations about how she should speak or act were used to diminish her professionalism.

Her response has always been calm, firm, and confident. She continues to support women entering construction and healthcare leadership, reminding them that they can succeed without compromising who they are. She encourages them to find leadership styles that feel authentic, not performative.
“Every woman deserves respect and equal opportunity,” she says, a statement that underpins her advocacy for inclusivity and representation.
For Debenham, every hallway, renovation, staff lounge, and major redeveloped area is an opportunity to reinforce St. Joe’s mission. She believes that healing environments must serve everyone who walks through the doors, including the staff who show up every day to care for the community.
Her work is not only about infrastructure. It is about creating a culture of belonging, fostering teamwork, and shaping spaces that embody compassion. Whether she is mentoring her team, supporting a clinical team through envisioning long-term capital improvements, or construction, she approaches every interaction with empathy and intention.
At St. Joe’s, those values are not just part of her job. They are who she is.
