Leigh Marr – Tailored Brands

Pioneering construction excellence

Tailored Brands, Inc. houses renowned names like Men’s Wearhouse, Joseph A. Bank Clothiers, K&G Fashion Superstore in the U.S. and Moore’s in Canada. With a network of 900 stores, the company is on a robust growth trajectory, constantly evolving to meet the diverse needs of its customers.

Central to this expansion and innovation is Leigh Marr, the senior manager of construction, who plays a critical role in steering the company’s construction projects and shaping the future of its retail spaces.

Marr’s role is multifaceted and demanding. She oversees the management of all construction projects, ensuring they are executed on time and within budget. Her responsibilities span from strategic planning and resource allocation to implementing best practices that guarantee the highest standards of quality and safety. Marr’s leadership is not just about managing projects; it’s about transforming spaces to reflect the company’s vision and values, enhancing the customer experience at every turn.

“My goal is to transform our retail spaces to reflect our vision and values, ensuring that each project is completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality and safety standards. It’s all about creating an exceptional customer experience,” Marr says.

Driving innovation

Under Marr’s stewardship, Tailored Brands is planning to open six new Men’s Wearhouse stores and three new K&G locations. These new stores are more than just expansions, they are a testament to the company’s commitment to staying relevant and appealing to modern customers.

Men’s Wearhouse, celebrating its 50th year in business, is significantly transforming its store design. The refreshed look aims to showcase the brand’s versatility, emphasizing that it offers more than just suits. The new layouts are designed to inspire men to create their own looks, with strategically designed presentation areas featuring complete outfits. This approach allows customers to explore and get inspired independently while still having staff available throughout the store to help when needed. The redesign also includes the introduction of podiums for easier checkout, enabling staff to assist customers throughout the store rather than being confined to the front.

Marr has introduced modern, flexible design elements into the new store layouts. These include modular fixtures that can be easily reconfigured to highlight seasonal collections or special promotions. This adaptability ensures that the stores remain fresh and engaging, encouraging repeat customer visits. The new design also incorporates advanced lighting solutions to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, making the shopping experience more pleasant and appealing.

Marr’s innovative approach extends beyond the aesthetics and functionality of the store interiors. She has also integrated sustainable construction practices into her projects. This includes the use of eco-friendly materials and energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems. By prioritizing sustainability, Marr reduces the environmental impact of new store constructions and aligns Tailored Brands with the growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible businesses.

Marr is leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance the construction process itself. She has implemented advanced project management software that allows for real-time tracking of progress, budgets, and timelines. This technological integration ensures that all stakeholders are informed and that potential issues are addressed promptly, thereby reducing delays and cost overruns.

Developing and retaining top talent

A cornerstone of Marr’s success is her ability to build and nurture a talented team of young project managers. She believes that having a youthful team is advantageous as they are quick learners and can be molded to master the basics of project management. Marr emphasizes the importance of reacting to challenges as they arise, a critical skill in the dynamic field of construction management.

Marr’s approach to team development is holistic. She fosters a culture where project managers are encouraged to see themselves as owner representatives, instilling a sense of pride and ownership in their projects. This mindset is crucial for ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget and meet the high standards expected by Tailored Brands.

Retention of talent is a significant focus for Marr. She understands that for her team to thrive, they need to feel engaged and valued. Marr’s leadership style is inclusive, ensuring that each team member understands their role’s impact on the company’s success. She keeps her team motivated and invested in their work by providing continuous learning opportunities and encouraging innovation.

Marr’s extensive experience equips her with a unique perspective. She leverages this diverse background to mentor her team effectively, sharing insights and strategies that have proven successful in various contexts. This mentorship is vital for developing a robust team capable of handling the complexities of large-scale construction projects.

Commitment to excellence

Marr’s career in the construction industry is marked by dedication and steady progression. She began her academic journey at the Rochester Institute of Technology, earning a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s in facility management.

Starting at Wegmans Food Markets as a project field technician, Marr gained practical experience in new builds and project control. She then moved to Best Buy, where she quickly advanced from project team lead to construction project manager, managing various projects and honing her leadership skills.

In 2012, Marr joined Tailored Brands. Over a decade, she rose through the ranks, starting as a senior construction project manager in 2018, overseeing new store openings and remodels. Her effective project management promoted her to director of construction in 2021. By April 2023, she transitioned to senior construction manager, focusing on hands-on project oversight and ensuring timely, on-budget completion.

Marr’s diverse background equips her with a comprehensive industry perspective. Outside work, she enjoys woodworking, cycling, and outdoor projects, reflecting her craftsmanship and attention to detail. Marr’s journey at Tailored Brands showcases her commitment to excellence and adaptability in a dynamic industry.
