With a rapidly growing footprint, including locations across New York City and beyond, the company has demonstrated its resilience and innovation, even expanding during the pandemic. Bond Vet’s mission is clear: to provide thoughtful, empathetic care for pets while creating positive experiences for pet owners and staff alike.
Lauren Heuser, the company’s senior director of real estate, is at the forefront of this growth. She ensures that each new location aligns with the company’s ambitious expansion goals and commitment to creating accessible and welcoming environments.
“I support and follow the company’s mission to ‘Strengthen the human-animal bond by delivering advanced pet care that is accessible, feels delightful and is sustainable for our teams, clients and business,’” she says.
Building a foundation
Heuser’s role at Bond Vet combines strategy, analysis, and creativity. With the company planning to grow to over 70 locations by the end of 2026, Heuser’s work is central to ensuring that Bond Vet continues to grow sustainably. Her responsibilities include scouting, acquiring, and negotiating leases for properties while developing market growth strategies to identify promising areas for expansion.

“I think of this as solving an ever-changing puzzle,” Heuser explains. “We’re always considering how a market aligns with our growth goals and the broader business perspective. Each property we secure needs to work both for the pets and their owners and for the veterinary professionals who will call the clinic home.”
Heuser’s efforts balance meticulous data analysis and on-the-ground intuition. She uses cutting-edge tools to identify opportunities, sourcing data on credit card spending, pet supply orders, and mobile device movement patterns. Working with partners like CBRE and Placer AI, in conjunction with custom-built in-house systems, provides insights into market trends and customer behaviors.
“This is where creativity comes into play,” she says. “The data gives us clues, but it’s up to us to interpret it and find solutions.”
A dynamic landscape
The veterinary care market is volatile, influenced by shifting demographics, market trends, and even the aging of pets. Heuser and her team must remain nimble, adapting criteria as conditions evolve. For instance, while some locations may show high demand for veterinary care, the availability of skilled professionals can dictate whether the site is viable.

“A great location on paper doesn’t always translate to success if we can’t find the right team to run it,” Heuser notes. “Sometimes, we’ll identify a promising neighborhood and wait for it to develop. Other times, we’ll find an ideal space and trust we can attract the right talent.”
Heuser’s process involves frequent travel, often spending months studying new markets and neighborhoods to gauge dynamics and feasibility. Typically, this means making multiple trips to a prospective market to understand the general area and evaluate potential sites.
“It’s not just about the numbers,” she says. “It’s about feeling out the neighborhood and seeing if it aligns with our vision.”
Once a location is chosen, it takes about 18 months from starting negotiations to the clinic’s grand opening. By leveraging nearly complete first-generation or second-generation spaces—existing buildings rather than new constructions—Heuser and her team can accelerate timelines while minimizing costs.
Heuser’s background in architecture has given her a unique perspective on real estate. She approaches negotiations with empathy and a focus on creating win-win scenarios.
“Landlords want financial security, and we want a space that fits our needs. The goal is to find common ground where both parties feel successful,” she says.
Her architectural training also influences how she envisions spaces. “I’m always thinking about the end user,” Heuser explains. “
How do we make a space safe, comfortable, and enjoyable for everyone who walks through our doors—whether they’re a pet parent, an employee or a pet?”
From LEGOs to community
Heuser has always loved building—whether physical structures or organizational systems. A lifelong LEGO enthusiast, she discovered her knack for problem-solving and creativity at a young age. This passion carried her through architecture school and into a career spanning design, development and real estate.

Her experience at prestigious firms like Skidmore, Owings & Merrill honed her professional mindset. She credits mentors with helping shape her approach to leadership and problem-solving.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with incredible mentors who taught me the value of thinking critically and strategically,” she says.
Today, Heuser applies these lessons to her Bond Vet role and leadership style. Whether managing internal teams or external partners, she values trust and independence.
“I believe in giving people the freedom to do their best work, whether it’s a CrossFit class I’m coaching or a project I oversee.”
Bond Vet is at an exciting crossroads. With its success in New York and growing presence in other markets, such as Boston, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Atlanta and soon Philadelphia, the company could easily rest on its laurels. But that’s not the Bond Vet way. Heuser and her colleagues focus on thoughtful, strategic growth, ensuring each new location is positioned for long-term success.
“But we’re not there yet. We want to ensure we’re supporting the business’s goals and creating opportunities for our team and clients,” she says.
For Heuser, the work is gratifying, and she says she loves being part of something that’s growing.
“It’s an incredible feeling to step back and see what we’ve built, knowing we’re making a difference in human and animal lives,” she says.
As Bond Vet expands, Heuser’s expertise and dedication will undoubtedly play a key role in shaping its future, one thoughtfully chosen location at a time.
