Jerry Snead – Alliance Material Handling

Opening doors to excellence

For Jerry Snead, division project manager for Alliance Material Handling, success is measured in more than project completions or profit margins. It’s reflected in the trust of long-term clients, the satisfaction of employees, and the strength of a company built on integrity.

“At this stage in my career, my focus is really on doing a great job for the company and helping the people around me succeed,” he says. “That’s what matters most.”

With over 25 years in the door and construction industry, Snead leads Alliance’s new construction division, managing everything from bidding and contracts to project execution. His work underpins the company’s ambitious growth trajectory, helping Alliance become the top regional supplier of industrial and warehouse equipment—and a future Fortune 500 contender.

Alliance Material Handling, headquartered in the Washington, D.C., area, has built its name across the DMV region by offering complete material handling and warehouse solutions. The company supplies, installs, and services a full range of equipment—from forklifts and warehouse racking systems to loading docks, modular offices, and cleanrooms. What distinguishes Alliance is its emphasis on quality over quantity, ensuring every client interaction reflects honesty, integrity, and long-term value.

Leading with accountability & foresight

As division project manager, Snead’s work begins long before the first bolt is tightened or a door is hung. He leads the division’s bidding and acquisition process, using platforms like BuildingConnected, ISquareFoot, and SmartBid to identify opportunities that align with Alliance’s expertise and resources.

“Whether it’s a single door or a multimillion-dollar build, we treat every job with the same level of attention,” he says.

Once a project is won, Snead oversees every detail—from material procurement and subcontractor coordination to quality assurance and client communication. His projects range from residential developments to high-security facilities and educational institutions. Current examples include multiple projects with Hess Construction valued at around $3 million, a $400,000 Marine Base expansion in Reisterstown, Maryland, and specialized installations for police tactical and educational facilities.

Snead’s ability to anticipate challenges before they arise is one of his defining strengths.

“It’s almost like reading people’s minds,” he says with a chuckle. “After 25 years, you start to see where things can go sideways. So, we use RFIs—requests for information—to clarify every part of the scope upfront. That saves time, reduces mistakes, and protects profitability.”

That foresight also protects his team. Many of Alliance’s projects are wage-scale jobs that offer field staff steady employment and higher pay. Snead’s leadership ensures that crews are not only busy but safe, well-informed, and part of projects that elevate both their skills and the company’s reputation.

Turning projects into partnerships

Alliance’s growth in the DMV region is fueled by relationships as much as by technical expertise. Snead has cultivated long-term partnerships with clients and general contractors who trust him to deliver on time and within budget. His relationship with Hess Construction spans years of collaboration across multiple subdivisions and facility types.

“We’ve known each other for a long time,” Snead says. “There’s trust there. They know we’ll meet the design specs, the timeline, and that we’ll be there after the job is done.”

His ongoing work with NVR, Ryan Homes and Crown Doors is another example of how deep client relationships drive sustained business. Over the past six years, Snead has managed the installation of high-performance garage doors across multi-unit residential subdivisions in Maryland and Virginia—completing two communities and now working on the 13th building in the third subdivision.

“Alliance Material Handling is a long-time distribution partner of Crown Doors, marketing, selling, installing, and servicing our full selection of custom-designed, automated hydraulic and electric door and window systems within the commercial, residential, and architectural markets,” says Frank Zuelke of Crown Doors. “Their strong market knowledge and impressive track record have made them an ideal partner with whom to offer our custom product lines within the greater Mid-Atlantic region. Throughout our partnership, Alliance has worked to uphold the high standards of Crown Doors and has provided exceptional service to our mutual customers. With Jerry as our primary representative within the Alliance organization, we have most recently installed a custom product in the 1200 19th St. Penthouse in Washington, D.C.”

When design challenges arise, Snead collaborates directly with architects and engineers to find solutions. At one site, limited headroom in parking garages threatened to derail plans. Instead of compromising, Snead worked with the design team to adjust the slab and integrate specialized, fast-operating doors capable of 500,000 cycles. The result not only met the technical requirements but improved aesthetics and longevity.

“That’s the kind of problem-solving that keeps clients coming back,” he says.

Snead also leads newer initiatives like smoke door installations in senior living communities, ensuring compliance with evolving safety codes that prevent smoke from traveling through elevator shafts. These projects reflect both his technical precision and his personal commitment to protecting end users—the residents, teachers, and service members who ultimately rely on the finished product.

“My responsibility doesn’t end when the general contractor signs off,” Snead says. “We’re accountable to the end user. If the customer’s happy, that’s when I know we’ve done our job.”

Investing in People and the Future

Alliance’s success isn’t only built on products and projects—it’s built on people. The company’s employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) ensures every team member has a stake in the company’s future. Snead takes pride in being part of that ownership culture, helping colleagues share in the company’s achievements.

“We’re all in it together,” he says. “It’s a good feeling knowing that when we do well as a company, everyone benefits.”

That collective ownership mindset mirrors Snead’s leadership style. He empowers his field supervisors to take initiative while providing guidance and structure from his home office. Though he works remotely most days, his communication with staff is constant through Teams, email, and shared project folders in SharePoint.

“I make sure all my project information is accessible,” he says. “If something happens and I’m out, the branch manager can go in, see the drawings, the specs—everything they need.”

Snead’s methodical organization is both a personal trademark and a professional safeguard. With roughly 30 active projects at any given time, clarity and accessibility are essential. His focus on documentation and process ensures Alliance can seamlessly transition leadership when he retires.

That transition is already underway. As he approaches retirement, Snead is mentoring a colleague to take over his responsibilities.

“He’s a little nervous,” Snead admits. “But I’ll start working with him more in January—training him on the sales side, helping him get comfortable looking at open projects and managing them from start to finish. He’s going to be great.”

Even as he plans his next chapter, Snead remains deeply committed to Alliance’s growth and reputation.

“I’ll probably do some consulting down the road,” he says, “but right now I just want to finish strong and make sure the division is in a good place.”

A career built on commitment

Snead’s career path reflects steady progression and dedication to his craft. Before joining Alliance in 2013, he spent more than a decade in project management roles with the Overhead Door Company of Washington, D.C., and nearly 11 years with Metropolitan Rolling Door Inc. Those experiences honed his skills in sales, installation, and operations management, preparing him for the broader strategic role he now plays.

At Alliance, Snead’s influence reaches beyond project performance metrics. His attention to detail, risk management strategies, and ability to foster trust among clients and coworkers all contribute to the company’s ongoing growth.

“We’re competitive on price, but our real value is in our service,” he says. “We meet specs, we meet timelines, and we’re still there for the client when the job’s done.”

For Snead, success is also about balance. Outside of work, he enjoys collecting records, listening to music through high-fidelity audio systems, and swimming in his backyard pool. He and his wife recently celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary, and when time allows, they travel—most recently to the beach for a much-deserved break.

“I’ve been doing this a long time,” he says with a laugh. “I’m good at it, I enjoy it—but I’m looking forward to a little less stress someday.”

As Alliance continues to expand its reach across the region, leaders like Snead exemplify the integrity, skill, and mentorship that define its culture. His meticulous approach ensures not only that doors open smoothly on every project, but also that opportunities open for the next generation of leaders.

General contractors increasingly rely on construction workforce recruitment to maintain project timelines.
