For companies like Comcast, trusted team members like Jeff Dobies have been pillars of the organization for decades. He’s carved out an impressive career in construction services that has spanned an era of massive technological change.

Dobies has been the director of construction services for the past nine months. He has long performed the duties required of his current position, transitioning seamlessly from his previous role as Senior Manager. His long tenure with the company is a testament to his dedication and adaptability in a constantly evolving industry.

“I had never heard of cable TV before interviewing for the job,” Dobies says.

When Dobies joined Comcast in 1981 as a cable TV installer, the world of cable television was vastly different. At the time, there were just 39 channels, and remote controls were tethered with cords. Like the rest of the industry, Dobies has witnessed—and in many ways contributed to—the evolution of telecommunications. From basic cable installations to overseeing complex network systems that power internet services, Dobies’s role has grown exponentially.

“Had I foreseen the rapid pace of technological advancements, my path might have been different,” Dobies tells Blueprint during an interview in October. “My passion for the work and role in shaping Comcast’s infrastructure remains undiminished.”

Telecom changes

In his current role, Dobies oversees all day-to-day construction activities across Michigan, Indiana and a portion of Kentucky. His responsibilities range from network relocation due to road widening projects to managing new developments and maintaining the existing infrastructure. Essentially, anything related to managing the network falls under his jurisdiction. This broad scope requires a people-centric approach—something Dobies has mastered over the years by building solid relationships with industry vendors, Business Partners, and developers, many of whom are large conglomerates. By understanding their business needs, he ensures that the necessary infrastructure is in place so they can hit the ground running, positioning Comcast as a trusted partner in large-scale developments. This relationship-building approach benefits immediate projects and opens the door for future collaborations.

One of Dobies’s more notable accomplishments in recent years is a large wide-area network project with a major developer in Michigan. This was a massive undertaking, spanning almost two years and requiring Dobies and his team to navigate the unique challenges of working in a downtown environment. The project involved difficulties every step of the way, but ultimately, they delivered on time. The success of this WAN project, which tied together 30 properties for the developer, was a significant milestone for Comcast and Dobies personally.

“This project has been one of the biggest pressure points in my career but also one of the most rewarding, allowing the company to leverage the relationship for future projects,” Dobies explains.

Building for the future

Dobies’s leadership philosophy revolves around teamwork and collaboration, reflected in his management style. He leads a team of 46 individuals working together to meet Comcast’s continued growth and expansion goals. But for Dobies, it’s not just about maintaining existing markets; it’s about ensuring the team is always prepared for what’s next. He is deeply committed to developing, mentoring, and training his team, focusing on preparing them for success. In a field that demands adaptability, Dobies understands the importance of flexibility and resilience, qualities he works hard to instill in his team. For him, mentoring the next generation is a responsibility and a way to give back to the industry that has provided him with such a fulfilling career.

Dobies’s career trajectory at Comcast is a testament to his ability to manage his job’s technical and human elements. Early in his career, he was put in charge of installing modem services for Comcast’s @Home internet services —an unfamiliar role at the time, but one that Dobies excelled in because of his solid people-management skills. Over the years, he has managed offices, departments, and regional teams, overseeing aspects across the cable business and network services. He attributes his success to his approachable nature, honed through years of dealing with the public at his family’s party store. His knack for mentorship and leadership has allowed him to take on roles that stretch his knowledge and skill set, from learning AutoCAD to chairing safety committees to sitting on the board directors for 811, often stepping outside his comfort zone to grow professionally.

Even at this stage of his career, Dobies remains focused on the future. At 62, he has turned down voluntary retirement offers, choosing instead to continue mentoring younger employees. For him, it’s not just about the work—though he still enjoys it immensely—but about leaving a legacy. He wants to ensure that Comcast is set up for success long after he retires, which means developing the next generation of leaders.

“You’re either a leader, or you’re not,” he says, acknowledging that leadership is not just about managing people but about having difficult conversations, taking responsibility and guiding those above and below you in the organizational hierarchy.

Despite the industry’s challenges, including the sometimes negative public perception of telecommunications companies, Dobies takes immense pride in his work and the team he leads. His investment in Comcast’s success is evident in his speech about the company’s evolution and the projects he has overseen. As he continues to lead construction services in his region, Dobies remains committed to his department’s immediate goals and the long-term vision of growth and excellence that Comcast embodies.

After more than 40 years, Dobies’s career has come full circle—from installing cable television to overseeing the vast infrastructure that powers modern communications. His journey has been continuous learning, adaptation, and leadership, and he shows no signs of slowing down. With three more years until retirement, Dobies is focused on finishing his career as strongly as it began—building relationships, mentoring his team and ensuring that Comcast’s infrastructure is always ready for whatever comes next.

“It’s been one heck of a ride, and I enjoyed every minute of it,” Dobies says.
