Christian Evans – University of Texas Arlington

Facilities, events & forward thinking

Christian Evans still remembers the uncertainty that comes with finding the right lane in a career. Like many college students interested in athletics, he initially explored different paths, including marketing. But it did not take long for him to discover that his strengths were better suited elsewhere. An internship in event operations at the University of Texas introduced him to the behind-the-scenes world that makes athletic competitions possible, and from that moment forward, he found a professional home in facilities and event management. That early experience launched a journey that would take him from Texas to Kansas, California, New Hampshire, and ultimately back to the Lone Star State as Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Event Management at the University of Texas Arlington.

Today, Evans oversees athletic facilities, event operations, grounds management, facility rentals, and capital improvement initiatives for the Mavericks. His role reflects the evolving nature of collegiate athletics, where success depends not only on what happens during competition but also on how facilities are maintained, utilized, and positioned to serve both athletic and community needs.

Finding the right path

Born in Binghamton, New York, and raised in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Evans built his educational foundation at Temple University, where he earned a degree in sport and recreation management. He later completed a master’s degree in college student development at Kansas State University while serving as a graduate assistant in event operations.

The Kansas State experience proved pivotal. While many graduate assistantships involve limited responsibilities, Evans found himself handling duties that mirrored those of full-time professionals.

“It was essentially a full-time job while I was in graduate school,” Evans says.

The experience accelerated his development and provided firsthand exposure to the operational demands of major athletic programs. He learned how to coordinate events, manage logistics, communicate across departments, and respond to the countless variables that accompany live athletic competitions.

Following Kansas State, Evans accepted a full-time event operations role at UCLA. The move provided exposure to one of the nation’s most recognizable athletic brands and expanded his understanding of large-scale event management.

For more than three years, he helped oversee events in an environment where expectations were consistently high. The experience sharpened his leadership skills and reinforced his interest in athletics administration as a long-term career.

While UCLA offered tremendous professional opportunities, Evans eventually began looking for a role that would allow him to take on greater responsibility and continue advancing his career.

Building leadership experience

That next opportunity arrived at Dartmouth College.

The Ivy League institution created a new position focused on event management, and Evans was selected to help build the role from the ground up. The challenge appealed to him because it combined leadership responsibilities with the chance to create systems and processes from scratch.

“I was overseeing event management for 35 sports and creating structure for a brand-new position,” Evans says.

At Dartmouth, Evans developed checklists, timing sheets, operational procedures, and organizational frameworks that helped standardize event management across the department. The role was heavily focused on events, but it also exposed him to additional aspects of facilities management and strategic planning.

The experience strengthened his leadership capabilities while teaching him how to build consensus among coaches, administrators, and support staff.

As institutional leadership evolved, so did the department’s vision. Evans knew and understood that enhancing his facilities experience would be crucial to his career growth. That realization led him to consider new opportunities that would increase his value to an organization.

Although he initially hoped to remain closer to family on the East Coast, an opportunity at the University of Texas Arlington aligned perfectly with his professional goals.

His move to the Dallas-Fort Worth area represented both a geographic and professional transition. It also reflected the commitment that he and his wife had made to pursuing career opportunities that would support long-term growth.

Maximizing facilities & community impact

The University of Texas Arlington, a public research university located in the heart of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, serves more than 40,000 students and sponsors 16 NCAA Division I athletic programs. As the Mavericks continue strengthening their athletic brand, facilities have become a critical component of both competitive success and community engagement.

That responsibility now falls largely within Evans’ area of oversight.

One of his most significant priorities has been maximizing the use of athletic venues through external rentals and community partnerships. Rather than allowing facilities to sit idle when athletic teams are not competing, Evans and his team actively pursue opportunities that generate revenue while introducing new audiences to campus.

“We push facility rentals hard here,” Evans says. “I’m probably doing something with rentals every day.”

Those efforts have included bringing high school football back to campus, hosting youth championship events, welcoming marching band competitions, and creating opportunities for emerging sports such as flag football.

The strategy serves multiple purposes. It generates revenue, increases visibility for the university, and helps build relationships throughout the surrounding community.

“My job is more than just facilities and events,” Evans says. “It’s business development and community relations, too.”

At the same time, Evans continues overseeing numerous facility improvement projects. Since arriving at UTA, he has helped manage upgrades that include a new video scoreboard and sound system at Maverick Stadium, track resurfacing efforts, a new portable basketball court, softball facility improvements, and enhancements tied to the university’s nationally recognized wheelchair basketball program.

Many of these projects require balancing ambitious goals against limited resources.

Like many athletic departments outside the Power Four conferences, UTA must carefully prioritize investments and maximize every available dollar.

“We have to be strategic about where we invest our money and where we ask for money,” Evans says.

That mindset has become increasingly important as collegiate athletics faces rising costs and evolving expectations.

Investing in people

Despite the focus on facilities, Evans believes one of the most important aspects of his role involves developing people.

Throughout his career, mentors and colleagues played critical roles in helping him navigate the athletics industry. As a result, he now makes a point of sharing his experiences with students and young professionals interested in facilities and event management.

He frequently participates in networking conversations, informational interviews, and mentorship opportunities designed to help aspiring professionals better understand the realities of the field.

Many students are familiar with coaching, marketing, or athletic administration. Far fewer understand the responsibilities involved in facilities management and event operations.

Evans views those conversations as an opportunity to broaden awareness while helping the next generation identify career paths that align with their strengths.

His willingness to mentor reflects a broader philosophy shaped by years of professional growth across multiple institutions.

That growth has required significant personal sacrifices. Career advancement often meant relocating to unfamiliar places and embracing uncertainty. From Kansas to California, from New Hampshire to Texas, each move presented new challenges and opportunities.

Today, those professional responsibilities are balanced with a growing family. Evans and his wife recently welcomed their first son, creating a new perspective on life outside athletics. When time permits, he remains a devoted sports fan and an enthusiastic Dave Matthews Band fan, a passion he has held for years.

Looking back, Evans appreciates the progression of his career and the experiences that shaped it. Each stop contributed something valuable, whether it was learning operational fundamentals, building leadership skills, developing facilities expertise, or expanding community partnerships.

Looking ahead, his focus remains centered on helping the University of Texas Arlington continue elevating its athletic profile while maximizing the value of its facilities.

For Evans, success is not measured solely by completed projects or successful events. It is measured by creating environments where student-athletes can thrive, communities can connect, and future professionals can discover opportunities they may never have known existed. That combination of service, strategy, and leadership has defined his journey so far, and it continues to guide the work he does every day.
